TELEVISION:
West of Babylon
The television series, West of Babylon, is set primarily in the milieu of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, west of Washington D.C.—a city in many ways similar to ancient Babylon. Greed, power, and arrogance are largely unrestrained. The story showcases the blind side of love as the plot follows the divergent paths of two unlikely lovers, Steve McCloud, an itinerant horseman and bar singer, and Mary Anne Dalton, a novel writer and unfulfilled wife of a prominent U.S. political figure. The star-crossed lovers are caught up in the swirl of two different worlds and are separated for much of their adult lives. The tale is an interwoven contrast between Mary Anne’s life as the wife of a prominent DC lawyer and the painful uphill journey of Steve McCloud, who struggles on to fleeting fame in the country music world. An unsavory connection between rich Hollywood stars, powerful senators, and elite members of the Virginia horse country society is often exploited in the episodes to show dishonor and class conflict. The series is packed with romance, political scandal, intrigue and tragedy. An extensive and evolving musical score is featured, including recurrent on-stage appearances by Steve McCloud and prominent performing artists of the era who spice up the saga. The two lovers are joined many years later in a surprisingly off-beat ending. This series is currently in production.
